My name is Jim Heitman. I am a Certified Financial Planner™ and founder of Compass Financial Planning. After more than twenty years in the financial services industry I concluded that there was no room in the typical investment firm for those advisors who truly wanted to put their client’s interests first. The structure at large firms is simply to slanted towards, and dependent on, product sales to ever allow for a truly client centered approach to financial planning.

. We focus on a “whole life” approach to planning. This approach means that we seek to understand our client’s deepest values and concerns as well as their needs and circumstances. The highly personalized approach is different from what most of our clients have experienced in the past and they find it refreshing, even exciting at times.

Unfortunately our industry is very focused on the sale of financial products (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, etc.) and gives little more than “lip-service” to the important task of goal development and planning. This makes sense (from a revenue standpoint) when you understand that most firms (and advisors) are paid a commission to sell products, Advice is provided for the purpose of selling products, and not necessarily to help the client achieve a better life.

At Compass Financial Planning we think we have a better way. Compass receives no revenue from financial service companies (that is to say, no commission). We work in our clients best interest, striving to give them advice that is unbiased and objective. In return for this guidance we receive a reasonable fee that is explained upfront and clearly disclosed. By eliminating the common conflicts in the industry and focusing on a core planning process (discover, define, and design) our clients experience greater confidence and clarity in financial decisions.
